The Case for the Monsoon

Half the zones shut and the rates fall. Here is why we think July to September is the most underrated season at Corbett.

What closes, and what does not

Bijrani and the core zones shut for the monsoon — that is real and there is no way around it. Jhirna and Dhela stay open all year, and they are good zones, not consolation prizes. Dhela in particular is the least crowded gate at Corbett and its sightings have climbed steadily since it opened to tourism.

What the forest does

It becomes a different place. The sal canopy closes over completely, everything is a green that reads as slightly unreal in photographs, and the streams that were dry stone in April are running. The property gets its own version of this: mist on the lawn most mornings, and the hills disappearing and reappearing all day.

The practical part

Rain comes in bursts rather than continuously, and the highway from Delhi is good now. Rates are the lowest of the year and the property is at its quietest, which means the pool, the spa and the good tables are simply available. We run a stay-three-pay-two through the season.

Who it suits

Anyone who came for the place. Couples, photographers, people who want to read something on a verandah while it rains. It suits a first-time visitor with a tiger checklist rather less — if that is the trip, come in winter and we will tell you so.
